Explaining Vertigo

Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness. You may feel like your body is spinning when it isn't. This condition can throw you off balance, increasing your fall risk.

Some of the symptoms of vertigo in Richmond or La Grange, TX, include:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Unsteadiness
  • Hearing loss
  • Headaches
  • Motion sickness
  • Tinnitus
  • Ears may feel full
  • Rapid, uncontrolled, side-to-side eye movement (Nystagmus)

Dr. Johnston at Signature Hearing & Balance in Richmond, TX, and La Grange, TX, offers treatment for the two types of vertigo. These types are:

  • Peripheral - most common, stemming from an inner ear issue or vestibular nerve issue such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, or Meniere's Disease
  • Central - less common, due to brain infection, stroke, traumatic brain injury, severe symptoms with instability, trouble walking

Some Causes of Vertigo

Vertigo decreases the quality of life at home, work, and social events, hinders one's ability to drive and can lead to fractures. Some common causes include:

  • Migraines
  • Some medications
  • Stroke
  • Irregular heart
  • Diabetes
  • Head injuries
  • Extended time in bed
  • Shingles in or near the ear
  • Ear surgery
  • Inner ear fistula
  • Rapid breathing
  • Hypotension
  • Muscle weakness

Treatment

After determining the underlying cause through an exam and specific testing, such as the Fukuda - Unterberger test, Romberg's test, head impulse measurement, vestibular testing, and imaging, Dr. Johnston decides on the best treatment plan for you. This plan may include vertigo medication, repositioning maneuvers, exercises, or surgery.

Unfortunately, there is no cure, and you may or may not have returned episodes, but we can help you manage symptoms. There are some things you can do at home to help as well. Consider moving more slowly, elevating the head when sleeping, resting when dizzy, avoiding bending and squatting instead, turning on lights when up during the night, and using walking aids like a cane if you feel you may fall.

If you experience chest pain, irregular heart pattern, sudden headache, increased difficulty walking, fever of 100.4+, vision changes, and arm/leg weakness on one side, along with vertigo, go to the emergency room.

Don't let vertigo get you down! This severe yet pesky condition can reduce your balance and decrease your quality of life at home, work, and social events, but help is available.
